At the beginning of time, Adam and Eve disobeyed God. By doing this they broke off their close relationship with Him. Since then God has been trying to make this relationship close again.
A long time ago in Israel, the people were told that there was going to be a special person who would come and put things right between them and God. Then they could be close to Him again.
Christians believe Jesus was this special person – the Messiah – who God sent to earth to suffer for our sins. Because he died and rose again, we can be close to God.
